Working in Mangakino feels like returning home. I lived in Mangakino between 1976 and 1980 when my Father was the Presbyterian minister in Mangakino.

After high school I studied medicine in Dunedin and then clinical school in Christchurch. House surgeon years in Tauranga Hospital before working in a mission hospital in PNG for 2 years.

I was been a GP in Taupo until starting a metabolic health clinic in Taupo with the other directors of the Mangakino Health Centre.

My particular interest is restoring health with nutrition and lifestyle medicine.

I live in Kinloch with my wife Vanessa, and we have 5 adult children. We spend our time looking after our lifestyle property and everything in the outdoors.

I qualified at Otago University and was in general practice at the Taupo Health centre for 31 years. I also have worked in the Australian outback for eight years including in emergency departments. I have an interest in mental health and did my Masters thesis on the experience of Depression in the Tokelauan Culture. I have my Diploma in Obstetrics and whilst in Taupo had an active Obstetrics practice before the change to midwifery obstetrics. I am married to Dr Helen and have four children and nine mokopuna. I am a keen bagpiper and an enthusiastic cyclist.

My name is Vanessa Davies (nee Lord-Bacher) and I was born and raised in MKO.

I went to Whakamaru Primary until I was 12 and then Mangakino High School.

I trained as a nurse in Rotorua and during that time, worked at the Mangakino Lodge. After completing my training, my first role as a RN was at Mangakino Rest Home.

I have three adult children and currently live in Kinloch.

I have really loved coming back and working in the community, reconnecting with familiar faces who remember my family and I.

Although I live 'out of town' for some of the week, I'm also a part time Mangakino resident and love being by the lake. You'll see me in the gym or the library.

Having lived in Mangakino as a child and visiting my grandparents, who have called this community their home since 1969, I have a deep connection to the area. For the past 20 years, I’ve been fortunate to live locally whilst raising my family.
